We take you on a day trip to a town once known for its fields of gold. Yes, gold mines that date as far back as the Harappan civilization. The mines were closed down in the early 2000’s because of decreasing deposits but the town continues to hold its allure with its wealth of history. Ancient temples and beautiful landscapes continue to beckon. Explore some history of this intriguing town with us.
We set off early in the morning by 6.00 from Bangalore. We will reach our base camp after passing through the towns of Hoskote and Kolar by around 9 am. We first climb the 350 steps to reach the monkey-infested temple of Kashi Vishwanath. Pilgrims from surrounding villages frequent the temple often. Many people from surrounding villages also visit the temple to collect water from the perennial underground stream. The origin of this stream is still a mystery.
We go past the temple and enter boulder country. You will encounter rocks of all shapes and sizes all the way to the top of this mountain. There are a few caves on the way for catching a breadth. We go past the seven villages which lie on top of the mountain. The bouldering trail ends with a climb to the top of an old fort which is the highest point on the mountain. The lake on top looks serene and provides a refreshing ambiance for us to relax after the climb.
