We love it when tourism is sustainable and responsible. We found another gem tucked inside rolling hills and green fields. This is an eco-friendly community tourism project located on the elevated and picturesque mountain plateau of Wayanad, Kerala, southern India. Situated just outside peaceful Thrikkaipetta and surrounded by rice fields, the stunning homestay encircles a beautiful pond and a bamboo grove. Experience one of our authentic rural tours in Kerala.
The Stay: Stay at one of four beautifully designed bamboo cottages. The construction of all of them is done with locally available materials such as bamboo, areca nut, and mud. The walls are plastered with mud with a coating of eco-friendly mud-based paints. In furnishing, too, eco-friendliness and locally available products are the prime considerations here.
The Food : We love the food served here. Cooked at local homes with the freshest ingredients and vegetables, you will be left smacking your fingers for sure. Do not miss sampling local specialties like Meen Mappas, Chicken Varuthathu, lacy Appams with stew, Puttu Kadala, Kozhikode Biriyani, and many other coconut-based gravies.
The Reach: Thrikaipetta can be reached from Bangalore in around 6-7 hrs. Kozhikode (Calicut ) is the nearest airport which is about 135 km away. The nearest railhead is Calicut.
While it is so beautiful to just stay and soak in the atmosphere, Thrikaipetta and the surrounding areas offer you the chance to explore village life at its rustic best.
Go on a village walk led by a local guide. Walk along the lush green paddy fields, watch birds and see the villagers go about their daily life. You can strike some interesting conversations with the farming community as we pass through some organic farms. Our village walk ends with a visit to the factory where over 300 varieties of items are created from bamboo, all by the villagers. This is your place for souvenir shopping. You could also visit spice gardens, tea, coffee, and rubber plantations. This is rural tourism in Kerala at its best.
You could spend the evening at the resort with a cup of coffee and a book in your hands or if you feel more enthusiastic, we can arrange a traditional cookery demo at one of the local homes. If you would like to learn anything in specific, please feel free to inform us in advance so that we can arrange the same.
: Wake up to the chirping of thousands of birds and have a sumptuous breakfast before you leave for a tea estate. This is another community tourism initiative by the Kerala Government, which is aimed at rehabilitating the tribal clans of Wayanad. Today, this is a tea estate, tea factory, tea museum, forest reserve, and tourist resort all rolled into one. It is fully manned by tribal youth selected from the community and trained in community tourism, making it the perfect getaway for a day.
Well, these are just suggestions. There are many more things that you could indulge in, like trekking the Chembra peak, visiting Jain temples (unusual for this part of the country right?) or the Museum of Wayanad heritage. Or you could choose to customize our rural tours in Kerala.
