Shillong is one of India’s most charming hill-stations, nestled in hills that receive some of the highest rainfall in the world. The British flocked here, the rain perhaps reminding them of England, and the cool weather a balm to their sweaty brows. Today, Shillong continues to retain its charm.
If you love water, then Shillong has a lot of it. There are plenty of waterfalls that you can glide your way to. And the trip to Cherrapunji will be one of the highlights of your trip.
Where else can you visit the world’s wettest place and Asia’s cleanest village all in one state?
This Meghalaya tour is the perfect travel itinerary to get you started as a first time visitor to this region!
Upon arrival at Guwahati Airport, you will drive to Shillong (3-4 hours). On the way, you can visit the famous Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, which is a celebration of the feminine energy.
Early start – Head to Cherrapunji, which has been known to be the wettest place on earth!
You can also drop in to the nearby Mawsynram village. We promised water, didn’t we? Get to see beautiful waterfalls such as the Seven Sisters, Dainthlen, Khynrem and Nokhalikai Falls, intriguing Mawsmai caves, Ka Khoh Ramrah monolith, landscape viewpoints and an eco park.
Get back to Shillong and spend the day wondering just why the British loved it so much here. Oh! We are pretty sure you will love it too! If time permits, witness Siat Khnam archery, which is a unique way of local gambling where Khasi men shoot arrows in a haystack. Evening at leisure to explore the upbeat markets and dine out in a nice restaurant.
Leave early to Dawki (3 hours), a beautiful picnic spot near Bangladesh border. You would have probably seen photos of this lake on What’s App. Now, watch the real thing! Enjoy a ride in country boats in the clear winter waters of the Umgnot River which are surrounded by steep gorges. Later, explore the nearby village of Mawlynnong (1hr), considered to be Asia’s cleanest village with neat flower-laden lanes and cozy looking sustainable houses. You can also visit the living Root Bridge at Riwai village nearby.
After a leisure breakfast, drive to Guwahati Airport (3-4 hours) for your return flight, preferably in the afternoon. Tour ends.
