The Dzukou Valley of Flowers is perched almost 2500m above sea level in the remote Naga hills, surrounded by pristine rivers. Be welcomed with a lush carpet of greenery and see some of the most exotic and rare wildflowers in bloom. Although the valley is accessible through the year, it is in monsoon that it comes alive with flowers, birds, butterflies, and full rivers. One such exotic flower is Lilium Chitrangadae commonly known as Dzukou Lily. It is the only one of its kind and is the only place in the world where it blooms. So if you find the Valley of Flowers in Himachal too touristy, you know where to go.
[su_dropcap]W[/su_dropcap]e shall start from Dimapur airport around 2.00 pm and head to Khonoma, Asia’s first green village inhabited by Angami Nagas. If time allows, we will go for a guided walk around Khonoma learning about the fortification, history, lifestyle and paddy cultivation in the village. The people of Khonoma have set an example for the world outside in the way they have maintained the sanitation in the village. We shall also learn about how the community works for each other, how they’ve setup various peer groups and how they function to make their village efficient and beautiful. Overnight stay in a homestay in Khonoma.
After breakfast, we shall drive to Viswema with a packed lunch and start our trek to Southern Dzukou from there. The trail starts along a waterfall and after around an hour paves the way for near flat and gradual trail. The views from up here are breathtaking, dotted with colorful wild flowers like lilies, euphorbias, aconitums and hundreds of other botanical species. We will spend a couple of hours on this trail before we reach our camping site. Overnight stay in camps.
Today we will take a walk down in to the valley, another 40-45 minutes of downhill trail, dip our feet in the cold crisscrossing waters, observe and learn about the exotic wild flowers and rare butterflies. If we get lucky and the rain gods are easy on us, we may even end up doing fishing and treat ourselves on dinner. Overnight stay in camps.
After breakfast, we shall start trek back to Jakhama or Viswema and drive back to Khonoma from there. In Khonoma, we will go for a walk again and this time see traditonal paddy fields and the highly scientific ‘Jhum’ cultivation method, based around alder trees. The irrigation channels in the paddy fields were made by the community itself and are so efficient that they water the every inch of the fields. We will again try our hand at fishing. Later during the day, we will settle around a bonfire sharing stories, food and maybe some ‘khe’ or rice wine, too. Overnight stay in a homestay in Khonoma.
After an early breakfast, we will head to the Dimapur airport and head back home.
