Nestled a few hours away from the only airport in Nagaland, Dimapur, is the village of Kohima. This village typically comes alive during the Hornbill Festival in December every year. But there is more to the village than only the Hornbill Festival.
We all know of Uttarakhand’s magnificent Valley of Flowers in Auli. But what many don’t know is that there is a Valley of Flowers in Nagaland’ very own Dzukou Valley. Come late July and all the way till September, the valley is covered with the wild rhododendrons and lilies that cover the meadows here with their fragrance and beauty. The Dzukou Valley trek is a special moderate intensity trek that promises fun and adventure, as well as an otherworldly landscape.
Highlights:
We advise that you land in Dimapur’s small airport, from where you can make the drive straight to Kigwema village. There is a World War Two cemetery in Kohima that you can visit as well as a beautiful church. You would be spending the night at a homestay in Kigwema.
Let’s make an early start and head to Viswema, a small town that serves as the the starting point of your trek to Dzukou valley. This is the toughest part of the trek as there will be a steep ascent for the first four kilometers. It should take you about four or five hour to reach the place where you can stay overnight in a dormitory. Please ensure that you have good trekking or hiking boots!
Today, take a deep breath, and realise that all the hard work of the previous day is worth the splendid view that you get to see. The verdant grasslands can envelop you with peace. Take gentle treks inside the valley where you can also walk to the source of the Dzukou and Japfu rivers.
Why repeat the same thing? So, we will take a shorter route to get back, which will drop you off in Jakhama village. From here, it is back to the homestay in Kigwema.
After breakfast, drop to Dimapur airport. Note that the number of days can be extended!
